Russia says it is ready to use 'military' force to
protect its citizens if fighting erupts in the two
breakaway provinces of Georgia.
"If a military conflict develops, then we will have to
react, including with military methods," Russian Foreign
Ministry official Valery Kenyaikin said Friday.
"If someone doesn't want any negotiations or if someone
wants to rely on NATO forces to the point that NATO
soldiers will be fighting (in Abkhazia or South Ossetia),
then we will have an answer for them," added Kenyaikin,
who is in charge of relations with former Soviet states.
His remarks are considered as Russia's sharpest warnings
yet to Georgia about the situation in Abkhazia and South
Ossetia.
"We are doing everything to avert a military scenario,"
Kenyaikin concluded.
