Why We Must Stop For the Sake of Peace?

By: Sakhawadin Mustafa Mohamed September 26, 2005

The barbarous civil war in our country is a horrifying chapter in our history for all Somalis, but more horrifying for the defenseless, peace-loving people of Maayland and Jubaland. The civil war is an event that some people can’t even believe happened; many more would just like to forget it, but not the people of Digil & Mirifle, Bantus, Reer-Hamar and Barawanis. Some survivors from Juba regions can attest to the horrors that they went through, who will not let us forget it. Survivors who can not forget and will not forgive the barbaric men and the atrocities they subjected them to. They are all innocent individuals, who share only the suffering they went through and the injustice of being persecuted for who they were, rather than something they did, and it is very difficult to forget, when suffering continues at this moment.

According to CNN, it had only taken twenty minutes- the slaughter of 30 farmers, including four children, died late Thursday in fighting, which has pitted clan-based militias in Heejow Mahaad 200 kilometers (125 miles) southwest of Mogadishu. Digil & Mirifle lands are seized in each hour of the day, trees are burned down for the use of charcoal, the environment are polluted, and indigenous men that stood-up against injustice are shot died. More about the attrocities of the region please refer to my previous article from this site:

I had learned, of course, of the civil war, and listened with awe with my follow Somalis that the reason why these lands are seized is that the people of Digil & Mirifle are regarded as careless, lazy, afraid to die, and that they lack unity. By this analogy, one must honestly answer these questions.

Why is the ability to reason regarded as a weakness? Why is the ability to compromise regarded as a weakness? Why are the peace-loving characteristics of the people of Digil & Mirifle is a sign of weakness? Why do we glorify those that rise up and commit mass murder at the drop of a hat? Why do we think that those are brave people that must be accorded the highest positions in the land, regardless of the absence of ability and preparation to competently shoulder such responsibility in the 21st century? Is this how we are going to build "One Somalia"?

Somalia cannot be built while seizing other people’s lands, and yet claim that we are all one Somali (brothers) or call each others Walaalow. Logically, it is very strange that throughout the history, there has not been a single incident where Digil & Mirifle men seized a power or appropriated a land in Mudug region. Well, is this a sign of weakness or unbravery?

Also, it is very strange that we (Somalis) regard Israelis aggressors when they seize and take the land of Palestine, and yet when Somali mullahs from Guriyo Ceel seize and take the lands Barawe, Marka, Qoryoley, and Afgoye don’t feel the same. Isn’t taking other people’s lands is all wrong no matter who does it, whether Ceyr or a Jew? When Israelis take-up Gaza and West-Bank and arrest innocent Palestines we all feel strong remorse for the people of Palestine, and yet fail to feel little sorry when Indho Cadde and his men take-up Marka and unjustly murder and arrest the people of Marka. I will let my fellow Somalis decide who to blame the Israelis or the others? Recently, news agencies reported that Israel evacuated the Jewish settlements in Gaza. Unfortunately, the illegal settlements and land confiscations still continue in Juba region.

It is now a year since the advent of a "democratic" government. We were supposed to be guided by a constitution. All elected officials from the Speaker of the Parliament on down swore to uphold the constitution. The constitution says that the lands confiscated must be returned to its original owners. It also says something to the effect that the parliament has to appropriate lands before they can be disbursed. What has happened in this past year of "demonstration of crazy"? The Speaker of the Parliament illegally pledged a legion with those who are taking Digil & Mirifle lands. This same Speaker of the Parliament turns around and denies the Digil & Mirifle statesmen to have the chance to host the Somali government and the chance to have their land to become the capital of the whole nation (Somalia) for twelve months.

When atrocities committed by the Juba Alliance continues right now in Juba region, we know that they are not there for the country but for themselves. But for a speaker of the parliament to refuse to obey the constitution to the letter is downright malicious. What makes the speaker of the parliament to think that he has to behave under civilian rules for the twelve months of the year? Why does he want to cheat the Digil & Mirifle tribes of their region of the country?

Now, to the subject the road to peace, Somalis will never enjoy peace from Allah, we will never get the peace that we are seeking for our land, and our dream of returning to peaceful Somalia will never be fulfilled until we address the problem of injustice. In science, there is a law of cause and effect. Today, what we are experiencing in Somalia is the effect of a cause that we fail to see it. But only when the root of this conflict is exposed to the light can the tree of the conflict dies.

In this letter, I am appealing to minds of the educated Somalis who are living outside the country, and I would say to them that: we have arrived at a very critical moment when God fearing educated Somalis who are now supporting their tribes with money and ideas to invade and take-up lands, we have a responsibility in a moment like this to warn and cut ties with the wicked. We should not fear what the wicked may say or do; we should only fear what Allah will do if we fail to warn the wicked or support the wicked ways.

To my follow Somalis, we have to root out the root of injustice from the lands of Digil & Mirifle so that root of justice to grow all over Somalia. Also, to my follow Somalis and the peace-loving people of Digil & Mirifle, Banadiris, Barawanis, and Bantus I would say to you: Do not think that the threats that have been made against you are empty threats. There is strength in size, and if you want to survive and gain control of your resources, forget personal aggrandizement and UNITE now for mutual defense. Your agricultural lands will always attract predators. You need land, people and money to survive, and your lands will provide these.

Always give your best; never get discouraged; never be petty. Always remember others may hate you, but those who hate you don't win unless you hate them, and then you destroy yourself.”—
